I have monitored the popularity polls since the 2020 Presidential campaign started ramping up in January 2019. Toward the end of that month, Public Policy Polling released a poll that holds up quite well 14 months later. It showed that Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders would beat Donald Trump with outright majorities. The PPP poll pitted each announced and prospective Democratic candidate against Trump. Most beat him. One candidate tied him. Trump managed to beat only one of the candidates pitted against him. That candidate was Elizabeth Warren.
Against each candidate, Trump did no better than 43%. Trump won with 43%. Trump lost with 43%. Trump tied with 43%. The candidate that beat Trump by the widest margin was Joe Biden.
Trump’s poll number have varied between 38% and 46%. His disapproval numbers have never dropped below 51%. There have been some individual polls that showed “dramatic” rises Trump’s numbers that soon went away. I am writing this on 21 March 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic is taking hold in the US. A few days ago, there was an ABC poll that showed that about 55% of respondents approved of Trump’s handling of the crisis. Nate Silver shows that Trump’s numbers had been creeping up, but that they have dropped back once again.
As of this writing, Trump’s approval numbers in Nate Silver’s poll of polls stand at 43.2%, just about where they have been for the last 14 months. To the A2A, can Biden beat Trump? The numbers are inescapable. Biden can not only beat Trump; Biden can beat Trump soundly.
